Christmas Markets & a Little Holiday Couture

A Grand Tour through Cologne and Düsseldorf

By Ellen, Founder of Stella & Bone

There is something about Christmas in Germany that makes you want to linger. A little longer beneath the lights. A little longer in front of a market stall. A little longer admiring the details that make the season feel extraordinary.

Looking back at my travels through Cologne and Düsseldorf, it is those details that draw me in again. Nutcrackers dressed in brilliant red and blue, stars suspended among bare branches, and wooden stalls glowing against the evening sky.

For this chapter of the Stella & Bone Grand Tour, I’m revisiting those moments—and sharing three holiday pieces that bring a little of that festive spirit home.

My travels through Cologne and Düsseldorf bring a personal perspective to this festive chapter of the Stella & Bone Grand Tour, celebrating Christmas market lights, seasonal traditions, and holiday pet style.

A Christmas Story in Red and Gold

The nutcrackers make a fitting introduction. With their ornate uniforms, painted expressions, and touches of gold, they seem ready for a celebration of their own. Their rich colors set the scene for the market photographs that follow: red ornaments, evergreen branches, and lights that make even a small corner worth noticing.

That same festive palette finds its way into The Cologne Noël, our Red Plaid Knit Bow Dress. Its red knit, tartan skirt, and decorative bow make it a charming choice for a holiday portrait or a gathering with the family.

Inspired by the Christmas markets of Cologne, it belongs naturally in this part of the journey: a little tartan, a little ornament, and a reason to include your pet in the occasion.

Beneath the Christmas Stars

One of my favorite images from the trip is the canopy of glowing stars among the trees. Against the dark sky, the branches become part of the decoration, with strands of light tracing their way through the scene.

It is a beautiful reminder that a few well-chosen details can create an atmosphere all their own.

Der Weihnachtsstern Pullover, our Christmas Star Sweater, carries that festive feeling into a red, cream, and green knit. Its seasonal pattern offers a different mood from the dresses—a cheerful layer for holiday photographs and time spent together.

The café visualization accompanying this piece imagines a cozy pause in the journey, surrounded by warm light and a beautifully set table. It is the sort of scene that invites us to slow down and enjoy the season.

A Little Something Sweet

A Christmas market story deserves a moment for the treats, too. Among my photographs are waffles displayed on sticks, some dressed in chocolate and others scattered with colorful toppings. They add a delicious-looking detail to the evening’s lights and decorations.

That playful side of the season comes through in Das Lebkuchen Kleid, our Gingerbread Plaid Dress. A gingerbread character, white pom-poms, and a tartan skirt edged in white lace give this piece its festive personality.

It is a lovely option for the pet whose holiday wardrobe calls for a little more whimsy, whether for a family photograph or a celebration at home.

Bringing the Journey Home

Travel leaves us with more than photographs. Sometimes it is a color combination we keep returning to, a small detail we remember, or a feeling we want to recreate.

For Stella & Bone, this chapter is filled with warm lights, festive reds, and the pleasure of dressing for a special moment. Our pets are part of the memories we make at home, and choosing something lovely for them is another way to welcome them into the celebration.
